Meet the School Counselor- first day lesson for students.

Published by Krystal on

It’s that time of the year where school is back in session and your students will get to meet you! Whether you are in a rotation or not, it is important for you to get into your teacher’s classrooms to introduce yourself and get to know your students.

And a good way to do this is with a fun activity.

I have complied a list of my top 5 favorite fun activities. See below for details….

~~Have your students make a circle around the room and toss around a bean bag or a plush ball to each other. If a student catches the bean bag or ball they must share their name and something that makes them special.

~~You could have students complete a get to know you activity sheet that is called “All About Me!” With this activity sheet, students will share their name, something they like, a picture of themselves, something they love to eat and one thing that makes them special. You can find something similar to this on my teacherspayteachers page. Click here to access the activity

~~Have you ever thought about playing a get to know you 4 corners game? With this game, you would stand in the middle of the classroom and have a list of questions or phrases projected on the board. As you read aloud each question or phrase, allow students a chance to walk to the corner that best describes them. See below for an example:

Question 1: What is your favorite food to eat?

  1. If your favorite food to eat is pizza, stand in corner 1
  2. If your favorite food to eat is french fries, stand in corner 2
  3. If your favorite food to eat is vegetables, stand in corner 3
  4. If your favorite food to eat is fruit, stand in corner 4

Your questions to go in each corner may vary. It truly depends on what you want your students to learn or know about each other.

~~If you want your students to get to know your role as a school counselor, then I have the perfect activity for you. I have created a fun graphic organizer that will get your students thinking about the role of the school counselor. Students will have to cut and paste the sentences that describes how the school counselor will help. Students can complete this activity in a small group, in pairs or individually. You can find this product on my teacherspayteachers store. Click here to access the activity.

~~Let’s play Jeopardy! This game is so fun and interactive. And it’s free! All you will need to do is click on the link and create an account. Link to game: Here

Once you sign up you are free to create any type of game you would like.

What I like to do is place my students in a small group of 4 or 5 and assign a team leader. Each team leader will have a buzzer. I will have a question for students to answer and whoever buzzes first will have a chance to answer the question. If correct, that team will start the game. Once a category and amount is picked, each person in that group will answer the question. This will continue until each student has had a chance to pick a category.

Categories for the game could be…

  • Favorite foods
  • Words that best describe you
  • Favorite games to play
  • Would you rather
  • Never have I ever

All of the activities above are easily accessible. Your students will get to know themselves and your role as a school counselor in a super fun and interactive way! Enjoy and don’t forget to let me know how things go!
